  • C L O U D F O R E S T S E R I E S When it rains in Ecuador's cloud forest, you can count on Mother Nature to provide enormous umbrellas. The Xanthosoma (elephant ear) plant grows massive leaves and is known as the 'poor man's umbrella'. It sure comes in handy during a downpour!
  • C L O U D F O R E S T S E R I E S This time last year we were planning an adventure in Ecuador. We explored the UNESCO-designated capital city of Quito, spent ten days island-hopping in the Galápagos, and almost a week hiking in the cloud forest. Cloud forests differ from rainforests because they are found at higher altitudes, the trees have open canopies, and there is lush vegetation on the forest floor. This is a photo of my son looking at a large waterfall in the Mashpi Reserve cloud forest located about four hours north of Quito. The biodiversity in this part of the world is staggering. We saw incredible creatures like glass frogs, massive millipeds, and a sleepy tarantula. Lonely Planet recognized Ecuador as one of the Best in Travel Best Value destinations in 2019.   • Have you been to Bermuda? This award-winning island in the Atlantic Ocean is accessible by airplane in less than two hours from Toronto, three hours from New York or Miami, and seven hours from London. _______________________________________ I recently travelled to Bermuda for the first time - I can't believe it has taken me so long to visit this colourful island. As you can see in this photo, Bermudians aren't shy when it comes to selecting house paint. The rainbow-hued colour palette dates back to the 17th century when Bermudians decided that homes constructed with Bermuda limestone needed a splash of colour. _______________________________________ Beyond Bermuda's architecture, I enjoyed stunning beaches, balmy weather, and the art-filled Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.   • This baby sea lion is on the beach in the Galápagos Islands - a UNESCO-designated archipelago straddling the equator about 1000 km off the coast of Ecuador. Many people tour the Galápagos Islands on a cruise ship. I wasn't convinced a boat-based holiday would work well for our family, so I started looking for land-based options on the five inhabited Galápagos Islands. I discovered 14-room Pikaia Lodge on Santa Cruz Island where guests have exclusive access to a fleet of yachts for exploring the Galápagos Archipelago on guided day excursions, plus land-based adventures. We spent five nights at Pikaia Lodge - it was perfect. Before arriving at Pikaia Lodge, we spent three nights at Golden Bay Hotel & Spa on San Cristóbal Island.  A colony of Galápagos sea lions live on the beach in front of the Golden Bay Hotel - we spent hours watching the babies tumble around in the tide pools. After Pikaia Lodge, we spent a few more nights on Santa Cruz Island at the newly opened Ikala Hotel near the harbour in Puerto Ayora. The service at Ikala Hotel is fantastic & the owners treat guests like close friends. I plan to write an article on a do-it-yourself land-based Galápagos itinerary.   • I've written about how much we love rural Italy, and it's not just the beaches and Italian Lakes. Italy's Dolomite Mountains are spectacular. The village of San Cassiano was the base for our first family hiking vacation when the boys were five and seven years old. It was an excellent choice because of easy lift access to mountaintop trails, abundant alpine huts (known locally as rifugios), and family-friendly hiking trails. We still vacation in the Dolomites each summer. And while we enjoy hiking together, we also spend time apart. My husband and one or both boys may choose to mountain bike, and I may go for a hike or trail run.
