With tempting torte, rich apple strudel, and what seems like advertisements for the best Wiener Schnitzel at every turn, it is a good thing Vienna is a city best explored on foot. When you need to refuel, here is a list some of the best places to eat in Vienna, Austria.
Café Imperial Wien
Located in the luxurious Hotel Imperial, Cafe Imperial Wien is an excellent place to stop at any time of the day. The imperial breakfast buffet includes a wide selection of pastries, hot items, and the famous Imperial Torte. Traditional Viennese dishes such as Wiener schnitzel, are available at lunch and dinner.
Gasthaus zur Oper
Gasthaus zur Oper offers visitors another opportunity to try Weiner schnitzel, Austria’s national dish. Enjoy lunch or dinner indoors, or outside on the terrace during warmer months. The restaurant also serves more contemporary cuisine, suitable for vegetarians, and tasty beer from the city’s largest brewery.
For a sweet treat, be sure to stop at Oberlaa for macarons, locally known as LaaKronen, and gelato. Fortunately, the macarons are available in boxed sets so you can take some home – or at least as far as your hotel! There are various branches of Oberlaa located throughout Vienna, including one at Wien Hauptbahnhof – the central train station.
Beer Garden at Tiergarten Schönbrunn
The Beer Garden located on the grounds of Tiergarten Schönbrunn, Vienna’s Zoo, is a casual dining option with family-friendly Viennese cuisine.
Café Residenz at Schönbrunn Palace
At the Schönbrunn Palace Café Residenz, you can watch a professional pastry chef demonstrate how to make original Viennese apple strudel at the Apple Strudel Show. After the 15-10 minute show, guests are offered a sample of the apple strudel as well as a keepsake recipe. The shows occur daily, on the hour between 10:00-17:00.
Café Residenz is open for meals from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm.
A Viennese institution for over 200 years, Demel continues to create exquisite confections by hand. Stop by the jewel-box-like shop brimming with chocolate, champagne, and cakes – it will be difficult to leave empty handed.
From drinks and snacks, 1873 HalleNsalon, located off of the lobby at the Hotel Imperial, is a gorgeous spot to relax after a day of sightseeing.
