Review: Cathay Pacific Business Class Hong Kong To Vancouver

I often fly Cathay Pacific Business Class between Hong Kong and Vancouver on the Boeing 777-300 ER. There are a few versions of the Boeing 777 aircraft on this route.  This flight offered three classes of service —Business with 40 flatbed seats, Premium Economy with 32 recliner seats, and Economy with 268 standard seats. I’ve also flown on this route in a Boeing 777 with four cabins—First, Business, Premium, and Economy Class. Discover what it’s like to fly in Cathay Pacific Business Class.

Cathay Pacific Business Class Cabin and Seats

Cathay Pacific Business Class, configured in a 1-2-1 seating arrangement, is separated into two cabins – the first contains seven rows, and the second contains three rows. Each 21″ Business Class seat has an 82″ pitch and direct access to the aisle. A pillow and generous, fabric-covered duvet are on each Business Class seat.

Premium Economy is behind the last row of the Cathay Pacific Business Class cabin. Because of the proximity to a Business Class lavatory (between rows 19 and 21), Premium Economy passengers may use the Business Class lavatory – it depends on the Cathay Pacific crew. On some flights, Premium Economy passengers use the Economy washrooms, and on others, they come forward to the Business Class cabin. You may want to sit near the front of the Business Class cabin to minimize disruption.

Inflight Dining and Drinks

In Cathay Pacific Business Class between Hong Kong and Vancouver, passengers ordered food and drinks from a multi-page, multilingual dining menu, bound with red stitching. The menu described all of the meals, snacks, and beverages available during the 12-hour flight.

Deutz Champagne was served pre-flight and offered again before the dinner service. Business Class passengers were able to choose from two white wines – 2014 James Bryant Hill Chardonnay and 2014 Laurenz V. Friendly Grüner Veltliner, and two red wines – 2014 Muirwood Merlot 2014 and 2015 Loron & Fils Fleurie Les Saprolites. The dining menu contained a few sentences describing each wine, a list of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, as well as a reference to Cathay Pacific’s two signature drinks – the oriental breeze and cloud nine. Flight attendants were attentive but not overly generous with the drink service. Although the Cathay Pacific Business Class menu highlighted signature drinks, the flight attendants didn’t mention cocktails during the pre-dinner drink service.

Cathay Pacific has partnered with healthy eating advocate Daniel Green to create a Clean Cuisine dish with each meal. For my flight to Vancouver, Chef Daniel created a light and flavour-filled gnocchi with fresh basil and sun dried tomato sauce for the dinner service.

Breakfast was served before arrival in Vancouver. Passengers were able to select a cheese and herb frittata, dim sum, or carp fish with corn and pumpkin as a breakfast entree. Lighter offerings included fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal, and pastries. I enjoyed a light meal with a glass of Chef Daniel Green’s vitamin C booster, an Illy cappuccino, and one last mug of delicious Hong Kong style milk tea.

In-Flight Entertainment

Cathay Pacific’s StudioCX® in-flight entertainment system, presented on individual touchscreen monitors, offers enough entertainment options to keep passengers occupied during the overseas flight.

Sleep

The Cathay Pacific Business Class cabin was dark and quiet after the dinner service. Cathay Pacific has recently introduced a mattress topper to the Business Class seat if guests want to rest in a more comfortable bed.

Amenity Kit 

Cathay Pacific Business Class passengers receive an amenity kit designed by Seventy Eight Percent and stocked with products from Jurlique, a natural skin care brand from Australia. Nourishing lip care balm, herbal recovery serum, and a hydrating rosewater balancing mist enhance in-flight passenger comfort. Additional items include tooth care products, mouthwash, socks, earplugs, and an eye shade. A citrus-scented Jurlique hand lotion is available in the Business Class lavatories.

Cathay Pacific Business Class Lounge Hong Kong

Cathay Pacific operates a few different Business and First Class lounges at the Hong Kong International Airport. The Wing Business Class Lounge was closest to my departure gate. The Wing has numerous seating areas, including the Long Bar, Noodle Bar, and Coffee Loft. I stopped at the expansive white marble Long Bar overlooking the airport runway. Here lounge guests can order a cocktail, glass of wine or champagne. The magazine selection in The Wing Business Class Lounge is extensive.

Opportunities to Improve the Cathay Pacific Business Class Experience

• Improve Business Cabin cleanliness. On one flight, I noticed a large stain on the duvet when I removed it from the plastic packaging. And at times, the Business Class seat is not as clean as it could be.
• Celebrate Cathay Pacific’s signature menu items – flight attendants could highlight featured Cathay Pacific offerings like Clean Cuisine menu items and signature cocktails during the drink and meal service.
